The party first contested national elections in 1981,〔Nohlen, D (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume I'', p638 ISBN 978-0-19-928357-6〕 when it received 3.3% of the vote, but failed to win a seat. In the 1986 elections the party's vote share was reduced to 1.5% and it remained seatless. In the 1991 elections it received just 1.1% of the vote and again failed to win a seat. The party has not contested a national election since, but remains active and was part of the victorious People's Partnership alliance for the 2010 general elections.
